Our group is conducting a research programm around neutrinos, the most abundant and remarkable particles in the universe. Neutrinos play an important role at the border of particle physics and astrophysics. They are produce in great abundance in astrophysics sources, in the sun, in the atmosphère and in the interior of the nuclear reactor core. These have been studied for a long time at LPSC. It has now been established taht although they are extremely light, neutrinos are massive. It remains to be determined how these masses are distributed among the three known flavors of neutrino and if another type of neutrino, called sterile, exists. Our group is involved in the STEREO experiment at the Institut Laue Langevin (Grenoble). The objective is to determine whether sterile neutrinos are the explanation for the so-called neutrino anomaly reactor.
