The Ion Source Service has been developing the ECR charge breeding method for more than 10 years. This method which was invented in the laboratory by Richard Geller has been improved by the design of the PHOENIX charge breeder which is sold by the PANTECHNIK firm in Bayeux (France).The method consists in injecting a 1+ beam into an ECR plasma, to slow it down and to capture it in order to multi-ionize the initial 1+ ions in various n+ states before the extraction. The main characteristics of the method are the efficiency, the charge breeding time, the 1+ intensity acceptance, the emittance of the n+ beam, the amount of impurities superimposed to the useful n+ beam , the robustness and the complexity of the troubleshooting procedures. More than 30 different ion beams have been tested with the method:
