Rubin, perch\u00e9 \u00e0 plus de 2 600 m\u00e8tres d&rsquo;altitude dans les Andes chiliennes, est constitu\u00e9 d&rsquo;un t\u00e9lescope de nouvelle g\u00e9n\u00e9ration con\u00e7u pour cartographier l&rsquo;univers comme jamais auparavant. Dot\u00e9 de la plus grande cam\u00e9ra num\u00e9rique jamais construite : 3,2 gigapixels, il a pour mission de mener le Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST) : une campagne de dix ans destin\u00e9e \u00e0 observer l&rsquo;ensemble du ciel austral avec une pr\u00e9cision et une fr\u00e9quence in\u00e9dites. Ce programme vise \u00e0 explorer en profondeur les grands myst\u00e8res de l&rsquo;Univers, comme la mati\u00e8re noire, l&rsquo;\u00e9nergie noire, ou encore l&rsquo;\u00e9volution des structures cosmiques.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Si le projet est pilot\u00e9 depuis les \u00c9tats-Unis, il repose sur une collaboration scientifique internationale, \u00e0 laquelle la France contribue de mani\u00e8re significative. Le Laboratoire de Physique Subatomique et de Cosmologie (LPSC), joue un r\u00f4le cl\u00e9 dans cette aventure scientifique. Il est impliqu\u00e9 dans ce projet depuis 2009, \u00e0 travers la conception et \u00e0 la construction de plusieurs \u00e9l\u00e9ments cl\u00e9s comme le chargeur de filtres de la cam\u00e9ra ou encore des bancs d&rsquo;\u00e9talonnage \u00e9lectro-optiques utilis\u00e9s pour sa caract\u00e9risation. Le 23 juin 2025 ont enfin \u00e9t\u00e9 r\u00e9v\u00e9l\u00e9es les premi\u00e8res images de l&rsquo;observatoire Vera C. Rubin. L&rsquo;\u00e9quipe de l&rsquo;observatoire \u00e0 donn\u00e9 une conf\u00e9rence de presse \u00e0 Washington pour montrer ce r\u00e9sultat tant attendu. L&rsquo;univers se r\u00e9v\u00e8le \u00e0 nos yeux dans une qualit\u00e9 jamais vue ! C&rsquo;\u00e9tait aussi l&rsquo;occasion pour les scientifiques et les amateurs d&rsquo;astronomie du monde entier de se rassembler pour f\u00eater ce moment exceptionnel, fruit de plus de 10 ans de travail. Plus de 300 \u00e9v\u00e9nements ont eu lieu pour suivre la diffusion des images en direct, partout \u00e0 travers le monde. C&rsquo;\u00e9tait notamment le cas \u00e0 Paris, au plan\u00e9tarium de la Cit\u00e9 des Sciences. Les invit\u00e9s ont eu droit \u00e0 une visite en direct de l&rsquo;observatoire par l&rsquo;interm\u00e9diaire d&rsquo;Alexandre Boucaud, un ing\u00e9nieur de CNRS qui s&rsquo;est d\u00e9plac\u00e9 au Chili pour l&rsquo;occasion. Le public a \u00e9galement pu \u00e9changer avec les scientifiques pr\u00e9sents pour poser leurs questions et faire part de leurs impressions.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>En plus de nous montrer de magnifiques images, ces premi\u00e8res observations ont d\u00e9j\u00e0 produit des r\u00e9sultats scientifiques impressionnants. En un peu plus de 10h d&rsquo;observation, Vera C. Rubin \u00e0 pu d\u00e9couvrir plusieurs milliers de nouveaux ast\u00e9ro\u00efdes. L&rsquo;observatoire fonctionne en prenant des images de la m\u00eame r\u00e9gion du ciel \u00e0 des moments diff\u00e9rents, ce qui permet de faire des comparaisons pour voir les objets mouvants. Avec la m\u00eame m\u00e9thode, plusieurs \u00e9toiles variables jusque l\u00e0 inconnues ont \u00e9galement pu \u00eatre r\u00e9pertori\u00e9es. Ce type d&rsquo;\u00e9toiles voit sa luminosit\u00e9 varier dans le temps selon un cycle r\u00e9gulier, et peut donc \u00eatre rep\u00e9r\u00e9 facilement en jouant au jeu des 7 diff\u00e9rences cosmiques&#8230; Ou plut\u00f4t des 10 milliards de diff\u00e9rences ! Car ce n&rsquo;est que le d\u00e9but pour Vera C. Rubin Observatory offers a brand new view of two old friends: the Trifid and Lagoon Nebulae. The image provides a demonstration of what makes Rubin unique: its combination of an extremely wide field of view and the speed that allows it to take lots of big images in a very short time. Combining images reveals subtle details in the clouds of gas and dust. The more images we can combine, the more detail we see!\u00a0 This almost 5-gigapixel image combines 678 exposures taken in just 7.2 hours of observing time, and was composed from about two trillion pixels of data in total. No other observatory is capable of producing an image of such a wide area so quickly and with this much depth.\u00a0 The Trifid Nebula (also referred to as Messier 20) is a standout in the sky. It's a bright, colorful cloud of gas and dust about 5,000 light-years away in the constellation Sagittarius. What makes it especially striking is the combination of features packed into one place: a glowing pink emission nebula, a cool blue reflection nebula, and dark dust lanes that split it into three sections - hence the name \"Trifid.\" Inside, new stars are forming and blasting out strong winds and radiation, carving up the gas around them. It gives us a dramatic glimpse at how massive stars shape their surroundings even as they're being born. Below the Trifid Nebula in this image is the Lagoon Nebula (or Messier 8), another vibrant stellar nursery glowing about 4,000 light-years away. You can actually spot the Lagoon with just a pair of binoculars or a small telescope. At its heart is a cluster of young, massive stars - their intense radiation lights up the surrounding gas and shapes the swirling clouds into intricate patterns. The Lagoon nebula provides scientists with a great place to study the earliest stages of star formation - how giant clouds collapse, how star clusters take shape, and how newborn stars start to reshape their environment.\u00a0 This expansive image of Trifid and Lagoon together exposes an intricate web of dust lanes and star clusters that make this part of the Milky Way come alive with cosmic activity. The exquisite detail in the structure of the nebulosity shown here\u00a0 demonstrates the exceptional quality of Rubin's entire system - from its light-collecting power, to its sensitive camera, to its efficient data transfer and processing system.
