Through these collaborations, several areas of preliminary study and research have recently been initiated, such as plasma simulation in an RCE source, understanding specific phenomena in vacuum radiofrequency (RF) structures such as the multipactor, and the study of failure compensation in linacs.

For its experimental research, the Center draws on the expertise of the LPSC’s technical departments and receives funding from sources such as the ANR (EQUIPEX+).

History

The Accelerators and Ion Sources Division was formed through the merger of the LPSC’s accelerators and ion sources departments following the closure of the SARA (Rhône-Alpes Accelerator System) cyclotron in the early 2000s.

Since its creation, the division has focused on electrostatic accelerators for neutron production using machines of the GEnérateur de NEutrons Pulsé Intense (GENEPI) type. The GENEPI1 accelerator, following its successful coupling with the MASURCA (Cadarache Supergenerator Model) reactor and subsequent operation, was removed from Cadarache. GENEPI2 is still in operation at the LPSC. Initially designed for the Platform for Study and Research on Nuclear Energy (PEREN), it is now operated for the GENESIS (GEnerator of Neutrons for Sciences and IrradiationS) irradiation platform. The last machine, GENEPI-3C, was built and operated as part of the GUINEVERE project for the control of a nuclear reactor at SCK-CEN in Belgium. Today, it is undergoing a major modification involving the replacement of the pulsed ion source with an Electron Cyclotron Resonance (ECR) source as part of the SPATIAL project.

The development of RCE ion sources for accelerators is one of the cluster’s main activities. This type of ion source was invented at CEA-Grenoble by Richard Geller in the 1970s. Initially, these sources-which are often capable of producing intense beams of multicharged heavy ions-sparked a revival in the physics of atomic nucleus research (nuclear physics). Today, they are finding an ever-increasing number of applications, such as accelerators for hadron therapy-which destroy certain types of radiation-resistant tumors using high-energy carbon ion beams-or purely industrial applications, whether for materials processing or thin-film deposition.

The division has participated in several accelerator projects for nuclear research and reactor physics (SPIRAL2 at GANIL, MYRRHA at SCK-CEN), contributing to a variety of areas such as ion sources, beam dynamics, radiofrequency (RF power couplers), vacuum systems, diagnostics, and magnetism. It has also worked on hadron therapy applications for the ETOILE and CNAO projects. Finally, it has collaborated regularly with CERN on topics such as beam dynamics (LINAC4), radiofrequency structures (EUCARD, RFTech, CARE/HIPPI), and manufacturing monitoring.

To this day, collaborations with GANIL and CERN continue, including, for example, the development of the ASTERICS ion source and multipactor studies for the FCC.

       Scientific Activities

Charges booster

Since the late 1990s, the division has been developing the « PHOENIX »-type « Charge Booster » ion source, which is capable of increasing the charge state of a low-energy beam. The ions are decelerated in the source’s RCE plasma, where they lose their electrons through electron bombardment before being extracted as an ion beam via an electrode system. Charge boosters are used in research facilities studying exotic ions-such as GANIL-SPIRAL1, TRIUMF-ISAC, and LNL-SPES-to make their re-acceleration more efficient. The developments carried out on the LPSC’s R&D source aim to improve the performance of charge boosters. These studies are supported and conducted in cooperation with GANIL. The LPSC also collaborates on the development of the LNL-SPES source, for which two collaboration and research contracts enabled the fabrication of the source and the subsequent reduction of co-extracted contamination-a key parameter for this technology. The LPSC’s 1+N+ test bench, on which the charge booster and its various diagnostics are tested, is also used during international experimental campaigns aimed at gaining a better understanding of RCE plasmas.

Booster de charges

ECRIPAC – Plasmas simulation

Le projet ECRIPAC (Electron Cyclotron Resonance Ion Plasma Acceleration) s’intéresse à valider par simulation le concept d’accélération plasma de pulses d’ions comme proposé par R.
