The Detectors and Instrumentation depeartment's research and development activities are declined at present in three major themes:

  • "Detectors", which  collects all the R&D activities on the studies of new systems of particles detection, the new concepts which use already experienced detection techniques and the new detector characterization systems.
  • "Command and control", which studies the modern means of experiments piloting, which it is material or software, including the development of interfaces suited to the state-of-the-art instruments.
  • "Materials", which collects the research activities on the implementation of the new materials used for the diverse instrumentations of the experiments including the studies on their manufacturing, gluing and thin films

Detectors R&D

  • Pixelized Micromegas design and tests for low pressures, (drift cage - Mylar Cathode, field reducing frame, electronics, mechanics for stainless tank)
  • µTPC design and tests for nucleus blacklash detection.
  • Purification and gases quality control system for the gas detectors.
  • Study of characteristics (speed of drift, attachment, ...) of gas mixtures for µTPC.

This activity is connected with the MIMAC project and is assured at the SDI by Olivier Guillaudin, Marc Marton, JF Muraz, Nadine Sauzet and Clément Thomassé..

  • HF polarizers (polarimeter K / Cu 58 µm) Design and manufacturing.

This activity is connected with the CMB project and is assured at the SDI by Olivier Guillaudin

  • beam Prospinner in radiotherapy, V1 and V2 pixelized detectors, Mylar windows and Mylar/to Al - nest of bee, Cu / Ht grid, electronics, Al. mechanics.

This activity is connected with the DAME project and is assured at the SDI by Olivier Guillaudin.


Control SystemsR&D

  • LabVIEW/JMS (Java Service message) communication study.
  • LabVIEW low level instruments command and control, sensors, supplies, etc., of the CCOB while CCS (Camera Control System), written in Java, CCOB control and the camera at high level. The purpose is, from the LabVIEW point of view, to receive the commands and to send back status and data towards CCS, that is establishing a gateway between CCS and CCOB, thing which was not established according to our knowledge.

This activity is connected with the LSST project and is assured at the SDI by Remi Faure et Myriam Migliore.

  • Study and development of a LabVIEW generic interface piloted by USB modules of ECR ions sources

This activity is connected with the MIMAC (COMIMAC) project and is assured at the SDI by Olivier Guillaudin, Remi Faure et Olivier Zimmermann.

  • Study and development of the interfacing of the system EPICS (supervision, real-time and distributed command-control for the big scientific instruments) with LabVIEW in the case of the composite architectures. Devices which are often imperative in project development phasis for big devices.

This activity is connected with the SPIRAL 2 (N+) project and is assured at the SDI by Olivier Zimmermann et Remi Faure.

Instrumentation and Data Acquisition courses

For many years, many department members offer courses and labs in the areas of instrumentation and data acquisition in various courses of Université Grenoble Alpes or Grenoble INP.

Technical management of the LPSC Instrumentation and Subatomic plateform

Florent Collovati, Grenoble INP agent within SDI, is responsible for the management, the development and the technical maintenance of the Instrumentation & Subatomic Physics Platform. This shared teaching platform between Grenoble INP-PHELMA and UGA-PHITEM, with a total surface area of ​​240 m², allows practical work to be carried out in the fields of nuclear instrumentation and experimental subatomic physics. With around twenty experimental devices, two computer rooms, one of which has a PWR (Pressurized Water Reactors) driving simulator, this platform is one of the most important platforms in subatomic physics at the national level.

 

In-house LabVIEW programming training

Two courses on the subject are held each year for CNRS or Grenoble INP:

    • Initiation Level
      Since 2002, a session of three days per year for 10 people.

    • Advanced Level
      One three days session per year for 10 people (since 2010).

These courses are provided by Adeline Richard, Patrick Stassi and Olivier Zimmermann.

Animation of the AlpesVIEW regional network

For those who program with LabVIEW graphical language either on a regular or occasional basis, with different levels of expertise, novice or experienced. It offers a place for knowledge and experiences exchange, sharing code or information or setting up meetings or events. This network is close to everyone in the research field, with a reasonable size allowing flexibility and durability.

Established in 2005 in the French Alps region by members from different laboratoriesthe network is based on a mailing list.

In-house Project Management training

Several members of the department participated as speakers in the training project management CNRS and IN2P3.

Discovery internships for high-school students

Since 1998, Gabriel Mondin, Myriam Migliore, Murielle Heusch, Olivier Zimmermann and Florent Colovati organize and supervise observation internship every year. Discovery internships at LPSC are a unique opportunity for middle or high school students to learn about research and engineering careers, and fundamental physics courses.

History

The "Detectors & Instrumentation Department" (Service Détecteurs et Instrumentation - SDI) was created in 1998 by J. CHAUVIN, LPSC's Director at this time.

The SDI was initially composed of "group technicians" and technical staff from the SARA cyclotron facility.

Successive department leaders:

  • Jacques Berger, leader from 1998 to 2002
  • Patrick Stassi, leader from 2003 to 2019
  • Jean-François Muraz, leader since 2020

The SDI is composed of 14 persons (5 IR, 4 IE, 4 AI et 1 T)

Responsibilities

The SDI was created in order to cover the design, realization and implementation of instrumental set up for the laboratory experiments. It was especially designed to provide expertise in the developpment of detectors used in subatomic and cosmology physics experiments.

Studies, developments, realization, implementation and maintenance of instrumental setups including:

  • Studies, realization, integration and implementation
  • Developpments, simulations and characterizations of particle détectors
  • Command and controls, automatic safety systems
  • Embedded data acquisition systems

R & D: Research and Development of new technologies in the field of instrumentation:

  • Particle detection (photodetection radiodetection, semiconductors, gas detectors)
  • Materials (thermal, optical, mechanical)
  • Control systems and data acquisition (embedded, wireless, etc. ...)

Assistance in experiments operation (working on site in most cases).
